How to choose an electric generator?

The market offers a wide range of electric generators. That’s why, when the time to pick the right model comes, several features and aspects of the machine have to be considered, as well as the use we will give to it.

Electric generators may be classified into two types:

  • Portable generators, for personal, commercial, and home use.
  • Industrial generators.

Portable generators are smaller, both in size and power. Their function is to supply energy temporarily, which them ideal to have as a back-up in homes, shops, and small to medium offices. Also, they are very useful to power remote areas without electricity supply, such as campsites

On the other hand, industrial generators are bigger and more powerful. They are built to supply electricity to industrial areas for long periods of time while protecting the equipment they power. This type of generator is also suited for hospitals, schools, factory buildings, and shopping centres.

Below, we discuss different characteristics to consider when choosing an electric generator:

  • Single-phase or three-phase

Single-phase generators are the most common for domestic use, because they produce an output voltage of 230V (volts).

Meanwhile, three-phase generators produce an output voltage of 400V (volts) and are designed for specific equipment that requires a three-phase current, ensuring a continuous supply of energy.

Although three-phase generators can be used in places with single-phase needs, it is not recommended, because its performance will diminish.

  • Fuel type

Electric generators can operate with diesel or petrol.

We recommend diesel generators for continuous use. Generally, they have a bigger range, and recharging diesel is less expensive. At the same time, keep in mind that these machines produce a stronger sound pressure when compared with the petrol-based models.

Petrol generators are ideal for using within a range of 4 to 6 hours, with stop cycles in between. These machines have the advantage of generating less noise, and at the same time they are lighter and affordable.

  • Inverter or AVR

Depending on the output voltage, electric generators can be separated into two categories: Inverter or AVR. It is important to choose the right one, depending on the type of use, to guarantee stable operation and to avoid voltage fluctuations that could damage electrical equipment.

Inverter generators offer a stable voltage and frequency, making them perfect to power sensible equipment that requires current without voltage alterations and spikes, such as computers, TVs, lighting, etc. Also, they are more compact, more silent, and lighter.

AVR generators feature an automatic voltage regulator allowing to power many electronic devices at the same time, going from appliances to machinery, keeping a stable voltage (± 2%), and offering extra protection for the equipment.

  • Power

In order to calculate the electric generator’s adequate power, a summation of the power used by all the devices to be powered simultaneously should be done. To do this, keep in mind that some electronic devices require a starting power (minimum required power o inductive power) that is usually higher than the operating power.

  • Other characteristics to be considered

Starter type:  Manual starter, electric starter, automatic, or remote starter electric generators are available on the market. Electric starter, or automatic starter models are recommended for high power generators or for industrial use.

Sound pressure: We recommend choosing soundproof models for home and business use (shops, stores, etc) to avoid excessive noise. On the other hand, if it will be used in construction sites, or remote areas such as the countryside, an open chassis generator can work too.

Transportation kit: Another important aspect to have in mind is if the generator will remain in a fixed position or if it will be moved, in which case we recommend a device with wheels, especially for generators over 20kg.
